Background Information

Dr. Brissman has taught at a number of colleges and universities, including the Oberlin Conservatory, Kent State University, University of Connecticut and Concordia College in Minnesota. She was on the WCM faculty from 1991 to 1994, and she returned to teach at the Conservatory in 2000. 

She has performed at the White House, at the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, and at art song festivals in Europe and the United States. In Swansea, Wales, she has presented lecture-recitals on song settings of the poetry of Dylan Thomas. She has also performed on WPR’s Sunday Afternoon from the Chazen concert series. 

Born in China, she lived in Taiwan and Malaysia before coming to the United States to study music at Alverno College in Milwaukee. Her academic credentials include Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance, with emphasis in accompanying, from Arizona State University; Master of Music in piano performance from the University of Illinois; Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Alverno College; and postgraduate study in vocal accompanying and chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She studied solo piano with Eugene List and has been coached in art song accompaniment by Dalton Baldwin. 

Dr. Brissman's articles on music have been published in The National Association of Teachers of Singing Journal, The Journal of Singing and The Swansea Review. She is co-translator of A Woman Soldier's Own Story: The Autobiography of Xie Bingying.
